1959 - 1963:
Joined AERE Harwell after getting a degree at Cambridge University and worked in the Applied Mathematics Group - quantum chemistry and thermonuclear fusion using Mercury, IBM 704 and IBM 709.
1963 - 1963:
Worked at Aldermarston designing and writing the IBM 7030 (STRETCH) FORTRAN compiler under Alick Glennie.
1963 - 1966:
Joined Atlas Computer Laboratory (ACL) to develop the Algol system for Atlas.
1966 - 1967:
Sabbatical year at Carnegie-Mellon University working on a display package for the Formula Algol system and the implementation of the Brooker-Morris Compiler-Compiler on a Bendix G21.
1967 - 1971:
Installed SD4020 microfilm recorder and produced the GROATS graphic system and many early computer animated films. Originals or re-creations are available at www.content-animation.org.uk
1971 - 1975:
Head of systems software at ACL, which included development of the node software for UK's first packet switching exchanges; installed 1906A; developed SPROGS animation system; installed FR80.
1975-1978:
Helped set up of the SRC's Interactive Computing Facility including PDP10s, Primes and GEC systems
1978-1979:
SRC's Coordinator for the Computer Science Committee's Distributed Computing Systems Programme of research.
1979-1984:
Head Atlas Computing Division at RAL then the Computing Division when two Divisions merged. Responsible for IBM and Fujitsu mainframes, Joint Network Team. Responsible for all SERC's technical and commercial negotiations with Three Rivers Computer Corporation and ICL in a joint project to develop the PERQ workstation as SERC's standard system.
1984-1994:
Head of Informatics Division at RAL with responsibilities for the Interactive Computing Facility, the Common Base Programme, various Alvey activities, and the Transputer Initiative. The emphasis over the period changed from supporting SERC's Engineering Board programme to an externally funded R&D programme covering most areas of Informatics.
1992-1995:
Chairman of the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) Executive Committee.
1995-2000:
RAL's W3C Advisory Committee Representative. Ran the W3C UK Office. RAL's Project Leader on W3C-LA which established the W3C Offices in Europe. Negotiated the follow-up EU project QUESTION-HOW.

1968-2000:
Professor Associate at Dept Information Systems and Computing, Brunel University teaching compiling techniques, translator writing systems and computer graphics.
2000-2010:
Visiting Professor, Oxford Brookes University teaching on their Web Technologies MSc launched by David Duce. Helped with several of David Duce's PhD students. Also took part in a JISC initiative to define archival standards for academic web-based graphical information in the UK.
1970-2000:
Standards for computer graphics. Member of both BSI and ISO standards committees in the computer graphics area. Helped edit GKS, PHIGS standards. Chairman BSI IST/31. Standardised PNG through ISO. Member of W3C's SVG Working Group and helped the production of ISO standards for WebCGM and SVG.
2000-2001:
Head of Offices, W3C, responsible for overseeing activities in France, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Greece, Hong Kong and the UK. Opened new Offices in Israel, Morocco (widening the set of languages handled by the Web), Australia. Negotiated with Singapore. Rented Office at RAL; salary/expenses from W3C Host at INRIA, Versailles.
2012-
Retired
Continued producing animations of the logos for the World Web Conference series Opening Sessions from 2000-2013. Logo animations available at www.content-animation.org.uk
Helped develop the web site of the history of computing at Chilton (Atlas and Rutherford Appleton Laboratories). Available at www.chilton-computing.org.uk.
